About
Thomas Willis Pratt (1812-1875; born in Boston, Massachusetts) and his father Caleb Pratt, designed and patented the Pratt truss in 1844. A truss is a structure that supports roofs, bridges, etc. A Pratt truss has vertical members and diagonal members that slope down towards the center. Here is a link to "A Context for Common Historic Bridge Types" that explains what a Pratt Truss is and its history http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/nchrp/docs/NCHRP25-25(15)_FR.pdf
