Died July 22, 1869
Born in Prussia (now Germany), John Augustus Roebling was a civil engineer known for his work on bridges, including the world's first suspension aqueduct.
He moved to the United States in 1831 and helped to found a Pennsylvania town, Germania (later Saxonburg), where he farmed before reestablishing his career as a civil engineer.
Roebling's other accomplishments include work on dams and railroads. He was named as Principal Assistant to the Chief Engineer of Pennsylvania.
The Brooklyn Bridge would be his final project; he was injured at the bridge site during the planning process and died of his wounds.
