Project Details
About this project
Members of the Engineers Without Borders USA University of Colorado, Boulder Chapter worked on this project to survey and design a potable water system that will service a community of 800 people in Huacapongo, Peru. Before the project, the water in the community’s system was too turbid to properly disinfect E. coli and coliforms through chlorination. The goal of the project was to remodel the catchment, improve the chlorination system, and clean out the current distribution line. The Engineers without Border team worked with locals to provide a long-life water system for the community. The project now needs to be monitored, which is critical to make sure the system is working properly.

Who benefits from this project, and how?
This project will reduce the potential that the 800 people in the Huacopono community get sick from contaminated water.
What's unique about this project?
The Engineers Without Borders USA University of Colorado, Boulder Chapter team traveled to the community five times to collect data, work with locals, and construct a new system. They worked with the head of the Health Post in Huacapongo and the president of the local water community who provided valuable input used for the design of the new system. For millions of people around the world, contaminated drinking water is a dangerous reality. Engineers Without Borders -USA is changing this reality -- one well at a time, one community at a time, one team at a time
